The Project

A demonstration and a blockade were held to try and stop this unsustainable project.

Neighbouring and First Nations communities are supporting Cherryville's request and asking the province to halt the project. Yet road building has now begun. The community is deciding its next steps.

Depending on what happens next, donations of money, food, and time may be required. Please "get involved" if you're willing to help stop government sanctioned destruction in a watershed.

How this turns out may impact similar projects throughout the province. We need everyone who thinks protecting our watersheds is our right and duty.

Send us an email to tell us how you are prepared to get involved. Follow Cherryville on Facebook to keep informed with what's happening and how to best get involved.

The problem we face here is corporations doing their own self-policing. It is happening in every sector of the province.

BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is going ahead with building a logging road on Cherry Ridge, despite the clear opposition of the community.

The BCTS prescription for this area is to cut all trees on site even if immature. This would remove approximately 60,000 m3 all at once. Read more here.

This prescription brings slide hazards, runoff risks for streambanks at freshet and disturbances of sensitive riparian zones that are necessary for the stability and integrity of the watershed. See 2012 Cherryville Mud Slide after clearcuts.

The community's proposal to use alternate routes and request to wait for the results of a new hydrology study have been ignored.

About

Cherry Ridge is in Cherryville, BC. The Cherry Ridge Management Committee (CRMC) is the environmental watchdog for the Cherry Ridge area and manages Cherryville's Community Forest in a manner that is ethical and responsible.

Cherryville supports sustainable logging.

As well, the community is questioning why the police shows up at peaceful community meetings in place of BCTS, who has been invited ?
